Brain Health Habit Builder

Brain health means keeping your brain working its best as you age. Maintaining a healthy brain protects how well you think, learn and remember -- and may also help lower your risk of dementia. Brain health is important across the lifespan, not just in the later stages of adulthood. Healthy habits can help you live better now and protect your memory and thinking as you get older.

The Alzheimer s Association Brain Health Habit Builder is a free online tool for adults of all ages. Even if you have a family history of dementia, there are things you can do to support your brain health. Check your current habits -- like physical activity, diet and sleep -- and make a plan to protect your brain health.

How it works

Check your current habits.

It takes about five minutes to answer questions about your habits. Along the way, you'll learn how different habits and health conditions affect the brain.

Get your personalized results.

See what brain-healthy habits you're already doing well, and understand where there is room for improvement.

Build your action plan.

Choose 1-3 habits to work on. Taking small steps, like setting a realistic goal for yourself, is a great way to start. Download and display your plan where you ll see it every day.

As you follow your action plan, you may be ready to focus on new brain-healthy habits. Save your results so you can revisit them to check your progress or build a new action plan.

The science behind the Brain Health Habit Builder

The Brain Health Habit Builder is based on decades of research. Most recently, the Association-lead U.S. POINTER study was a two-year clinical trial that showed a structured healthy lifestyle program combining exercise, nutrition, cognitive engagement and heart health monitoring can meaningfully protect brain health. Read the study results .

Dive deeper into the research on numerous risk factors with these science summaries from our BOLD Public Health Center of Excellence on Dementia Risk Reduction (PDF). Use the 10 Healthy Habits for Your Brain flyer (PDF) as a quick, helpful reference for how you can take charge of your brain health.
