What’s Involved?
Membership in our company is strictly voluntary and requires annual dues payable in January of each year.
An accurate portrayal of blacks in the Civil War is our objective and in order to achieve this, we need men with a strong interest in history and the motivation to do the job well. Prospective recruits should be in moderately good physical condition and willing to devote time and personal expense to sustain this hobby.
Our recruits will have the opportunity to see history come to life and be a part of it. In so doing, they will help us achieve the three goals we have in this hobby. Which are: first, to serve as a living monument to commemorate and honor the men who lost their lives and health in the Civil War, particularly those members of our namesake, the 54th Regiment of Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry; second, to have the 54th Massachusetts bring history to life as accurately and authentically as possible so that people who come to see us will have a better understanding and appreciation of their heritage and history; and third, to have some fun while doing the other two.
Our Mission
Our mission is to dedicate ourselves to keep alive the proud heritage of the 54th by preserving and authentically interpreting the life of Black Civil War soldiers and their officers. We commit ourselves to the education of the company membership and general public as to the life style, military service and general values of the Black Civil War soldier through an authentic presentation of living history activities: including battle reenactments, interpretive programs, training seminars, and similar programs.
We are dedicated to preserving the history of the 54th Mass. Vol. Inf. Reg. and Black Soldiers in the Civil War.
