At Caltech, research in biomedical engineering is centered in two graduate options:

Bioengineering research at Caltech focuses on the application of engineering principles to the analysis, manipulation, design, and construction of biological systems, and on the discovery and application of new engineering principles inspired by the properties of biological systems.
Areas of research emphasis include: biological imaging, bioinspired design, biomechanics, biomedical devices, biomolecular engineering, cell and tissue engineering, molecular medicine, molecular programming, single cell and single molecule biology, synthetic biology, and systems biology.

The Andrew and Peggy Cherng Department of Medical Engineering at Caltech (MedE) is one of seven departments in the Division of Engineering and Applied Science ( EAS ). Deeply rooted in multidisciplinary engineering, the department is distinctive from other biomedical engineering programs, placing a strong emphasis on the development of translational medical technologies and devices. Caltech's medical engineers work side by side with clinicians and researchers in medical schools and hospitals, with the goal of achieving transformative societal impact.
Areas of research emphasis include: affordable medical devices and technologies, biomaterials, biomechanics and bio-inspired design, medical diagnostics, monitoring, therapeutic implants, on-chip devices, medical imaging and sensing, medical nanoelectronics, micro/nano medical technologies and devices, micro/nano fluidics, prosthetics, wireless medical technologies.
