China Institute Grants
China Institute Grants
The China Institute provides two types of grants for faculty and students who plan to engage in teaching and research activities related to the Sinosphere, the cultural sphere that includes East Asia, South and Southeast Asia and Asian diaspora communities around the world. Comparative perspectives involving Greater China will be especially appreciated. Grant proposals will be reviewed by the China Institute Steering Committee, and awards are competitive depending on the availability of funds.

Teaching and Learning Grants
Teaching and Learning Grants, typically not exceeding $4,000 for faculty and $2,000 for students, are provided by the China Institute to allow faculty and students to engage in short-term academic activities that enhance teaching and learning about the Sinosphere as outlined above. Funds are available only for reimbursable expenses and may not be requested as a faculty stipend or as a payment to teaching or research assistants.
Qualified activities may include, but are not limited to: purchasing books, periodicals, software, tools, and lab equipment (except computers) for research or teaching purposes; taking research trips to archives, libraries, or museums; meeting with research collaborators; taking students on class trips; licensing software for use in the class that is not available on campus; or any other worthwhile, potentially high-impact classroom or research activities that require a budget.
Grant recipients should spend the funds within 12 months of receiving a grant. Grant recipients may also use the funds to retroactively pay for expenses, as long as these expenses are incurred in the same fiscal year as the grant is awarded.
How to Apply
Proposals should be submitted to Zhiqun Zhu (
[email protected] ). and will be evaluated by the Steering Committee of the China Institute on a rolling basis . Please see the proposal template provided.
The proposal must include a short description of the project and clearly identify the anticipated outcomes that receipt of the grant would support. Examples of anticipated outcomes may include, but are not limited to, creation of a new course (or course module); further development of an existing course; publication of a journal article or book chapter; or a conference presentation, art performance, or research talk during or immediately following the grant period.
The proposal should also include the specific amount of the fund requested and how the fund will be used for completing the proposed project. The complete proposal should not exceed one page in length.

Conference and Research Grants
Conference and Research Travel Grants, typically not exceeding $4,000 for faculty and $2,000 for students, are provided by the China Institute to support faculty and students who attend conferences, workshops, and symposiums or need to travel to research sites for projects related to Sinosphere either within or outside the United States.
Funds are intended to reimburse eligible travel expenses based on receipts, and may not be requested as a stipend. These grants may not be used by student applicants to fund projects for which academic credit will be awarded.
How to Apply
Please see the proposal template provided. Proposals should be submitted to Professor Zhiqun Zhu (
[email protected] ), and will be evaluated by the Steering Committee of the China Institute four times during each academic year, according to the following schedule:
* Decisions will be sent out on Oct. 1 for proposals received on or before Sept. 15
* Decisions will be sent out on Dec. 1 for proposals received on or before Nov. 15
* Decisions will be sent out on Feb. 15 for proposals received on or before Feb. 1
* Decisions will be sent out on May 1 for proposals received on or before April 15
Grant recipients may use the funds to retroactively pay for expenses, as long as these expenses are incurred in the same fiscal year as the grant is awarded.
A student applicant must provide a letter of endorsement from a sponsoring faculty member. The letter of endorsement may be sent directly to Professor Zhiqun Zhu by email.
