Recent graduates have been accepted into doctoral programs at top-notch research universities while others have taken lucrative positions in industry or pursued careers in secondary teaching. Majors have the opportunity to pursue their own mathematical interests through senior projects. Math has a vibrant and engaging faculty with diverse areas of expertise, and students can choose from a wide variety of interesting topics. Recent projects include coding theory, oceanography, topology, and pedagogical issues in high school mathematics. For those interested in more advanced mathematical training, a Master of Science degree program is available, which can be earned in two years after obtaining a Bachelor’s degree or through the blended 4+1 program that leads to both a Bachelor and a Master of Science degree in five years. Students admitted to the Master’s program may apply for employment as a teaching associate. Graduates of the Master of Science degree program are fully qualified to teach at the community college level. In addition to a wide range of challenging courses and first-rate instruction, you will also find many stimulating opportunities outside of the classroom. The Math Club regularly organizes social events, including sporting activities, barbecues, and travel. For the ultimate challenge, you may want to compete in the annual William Lowell Putnam Mathematical Competition or try out for the modeling team that competes in the International Mathematics Modeling Competition; our teams, coached by faculty, always place among the best in the nation. And, as an upper classman, you may consider applying to work with a faculty advisor on a summer research project and get paid for it! The Bailey College of Science and Mathematics has an excellent Advising Center , open to all students in the college. Students can find information on curriculum issues, general education requirements, changing a major, and much more.
