Not every step applies to every student. Your Admissions portal will guide you if any action is needed. Initial Placement Snapshot After admission, Cal Poly creates an initial math placement snapshot using the official information currently on file (such as scores and records already received). This snapshot helps determine which courses a student is eligible to enroll in at that point in time. Initial Math Placement Survey Next, students complete the Initial Math Placement Survey . In the survey, Cal Poly: * shows students what official information is on file, and * asks whether there may be additional information connected to the student's record (for example, test scores or college coursework). If a student indicates additional information may exist, they will be directed to instructions for submitting that information officially. Pending Information Arrives Some students are waiting on information that becomes available later in the summer (most commonly AP scores, which are released in early July). Placement may be reviewed or updated as new official information is received and processed. Math Placement Action Plan After completing the Initial Math Placement survey and confirming Cal Poly, students then complete a Math Placement Action Plan which clarifies next steps. The Action Plan asks students to indicate next steps, which may include: * Submitting additional official documentation to demonstrate readiness for more advanced coursework * Taking the Math Placement Exam (MAPE) * Participating in an Early Start Math experience beginning in Summer * Confirming intent to enroll in prerequisite coursework in the Fall semester Some options are time-sensitive, so completing the Action Plan promptly helps ensure all available opportunities remain open. Submitting Official Scores or Transcripts If a student has official test scores or college transcripts that: * meet prerequisites for the first math course required by their major, or * satisfy math requirements in their degree pathway, students are encouraged to send that information as soon as possible. Submitting official documentation early increases the likelihood that students can be enrolled in the correct course during registration and have access to preferred class times. If Current Placement Is Below the Major's Requirement If the student’s current official information does not yet meet the prerequisites for the first math course preferred by their major, the student typically has options. Depending on their situation, a student may: * submit official documentation if they expect to meet the prerequisite, or * take the Math Placement Exam (MAPE) (if available), or * enroll in the prerequisite course that prepares them for the major’s first required course. These decisions (and any planned next steps) should be recorded in the Math Placement Action Plan. Math Placement Exam (MAPE), if Applicable For some students, the Math Placement Exam may be an available option. It is offered: * online during summer, * in-person during Week of Welcome (WOW), or * as part of Early Start Math. Important: Students will have one attempt at the placement exam.  If a student plans to take the exam, it is generally better to prepare first rather than taking it too early without preparation. Some students who are waiting on AP scores may choose to take the exam as a backup option. Registration and Schedule Changes Students are block-enrolled based on the information available at the time. Schedule changes can be made later during open enrollment, but availability is not guaranteed and preferred class times may be limited.
