Start Strong in the Summer;
Succeed in the First Year!
English Summer Start
All incoming first year students may enroll in an online summer course designed to boost confident in academic writing and prepare for success in the GE Area A 2 written communication course. For more information about written communication placement, visit the Office of Writing and Learning's placement page .
ESE 105: Preparing for First-Year Composition A 1-unit virtual course consisting of six learning modules to level up the writing process, hone critical reading skills, analyze college-level writing styles and strategies, and develop effective writing choices based on feedback from a writing instructor. ESE 105 is more than just a writing class—it's a community. You'll learn alongside other new students in a supportive environment and build a strong foundation for success in college composition.
Math Summer Start
Depending on their math placement, incoming first year students have two options for online summer courses designed to help them brush up on math skills and prepare for GE Area B4 coursework. For more information about Math placement, visit the Math Department webpage .
ESM 120: Preparing for Calculus A virtual 1-unit course for students who would like to review the skills needed to succeed in Calculus at Cal Poly. Engage in 22 learning modules that include videos by Math professor Dr. Tully-Doyle followed by practice worksheets and the Pre-Calculus Math Placement Exame (MAPE-PC). The outcome? A passing score on the MAPE-PC qualifies students Calculus coursework before their first fall term.
ESM 105/90: Preparing for Pre-Calculus A virtual 2.5-unit duo course designed to strengthen skills for success in Math 118. Spend 20+ hours using ALEKS, an AI-based learning platform that creates a personalized study plan to develop and master college-level math skills. The outcome? A passing score on the Intermediate Alegbra Math Placement Exam (MAPE-IA) at the end of the course and qualify for Pre-Calculus before the fall term.
