Founder and director of AUC s Wireless Research Center of Excellence, Youssef was recognized for his pioneering work in mobile wireless networks, location determination technologies, mobile computing and intelligent sensing systems. His research advanced innovation with real-world impact and inspired the next generation of researchers. Sherif Kamel , dean of the Onsi Sawiris School of Business, is the winner of AACSB 'S 2026 Global Impact Award for Excellence in Service: Community Leadership. This recognition celebrates outstanding contributions to the AACSB's community through volunteer leadership, collaboration and engagement. Shahjahan Bhuiyan , professor in the Department of Public Policy and Administration, has been named the 2026 recipient of the Allan Rosenbaum International Public Administration Award by the American Society for Public Administration. He was recognized for the academic and analytical rigor of [his] research, which advances both teaching and practice in the field. Jillian Campana (Years of Service 2017 - 2026) , theatre professor and former associate dean for undergraduate studies and research in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, has been selected as a 2025-2026 fellow of the American Conference of Academic Deans for her work promoting equity, diversity and respect in academic communities. Previous Year Awards 2024 -2025 * Magda Mostafa , professor and associate chair of the Department of Architecture, has been recognized by Africans Column among its 50 Influential African Women Architects for 2025. * Bahia Shehab , professor of practice at the Department of Arts, received an Art Directors Club Award for a mural she created at the Nuart Aberdeen Festival 2024. * Shahjahan Bhuiyan , professor and associate dean for administration and undergraduate studies, won the 2024 Nadia Rubaii Distinguished Service Award from the Network of Schools of Public Policy, Affairs, and Administration in recognition of his service, leadership and outstanding contributions to the field. * With extensive experience in policy, trade and venture capital, Ismaeel Tharwat '13 , assistant professor of economics at the Onsi Sawiris School of Business and winner of the Cem Ertur Prize for his research on gender equality and international trade, believes today s youth have the potential to redefine industries. * Mark Deets , assistant professor of history and director of AUC's Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal Bin Abdulaziz Alsaud Center for American Studies and Research, won the 2024 Outstanding First Book Prize from the Association for the Study of the Worldwide African Diaspora for his book, A Country of Defiance: Mapping the Casamance in Senegal . 2023 - 2024 * Mosab Abu Toha (Years of Service 2024) , Writer-in-Residence in the Department of English and Comparative Literature, has won The Overseas Press Club s Flora Lewis Award for his work, Essays on Gaza published in The New Yorker. This award is for best commentary in any medium on international news. * Bernard O Kane , professor in the Sheikh Hassan Abbas Sharbatly Department of Arab and Islamic Civilizations , recently won Iran s World Book of the Year Award for Studies in Persian Architecture. (2024) * Laila El Baradei (Years of Service 2006 - 2025) , professor of public administration has been selected as The 2024 Recipient of The International Public Administration Award by the American Society of Public Administration (ASPA). The award is given to an individual who holds citizenship in a nation other than the United States; lives and works primarily in a nation other than the United States; and contributes significantly to the field of public administration as a scholar, practitioner, or both - as demonstrated by publications, awards, honors and testimony by the recipient's colleagues and beneficiaries of the recipient's work. El Baradei is the first Egyptian and the first Arab to receive this award. * Thomas Skouteris (Years of Service 2008 - 2025) , associate professor and chair of AUC s Department of Law, was honored with the Most Inspiring Legal Academic Award in the Middle East by The Law magazine. The award recognizes Skouteris influence in the legal field and in the classroom as well as his unique teaching methods, specifically the use of artificial intelligence in the advancement of legal education. 2022 - 2023 For the third year in a row, seven faculty members from the School of Sciences and Engineering (SSE) have been included in the 2022 top 2% list of Elsevier for their research output and its impact. The award is given to individuals whose open course materials and professional practices have been recognized as having an impact and influencing peers to share more openly (2023). Shahjahan Bhuiyan , associate dean for Administration and Undergraduate Studies and associate professor at the Department of Public Policy and Administration, received the Transition and Developing Economies Award from the International Public Policy Association (IPPA). Bhuiyan is being recognized for his contributions to the development of the field of public policy and public administration in developing and transitioning countries (2023). Moataz Nashaat El-Helaly , assistant professor, Department of Accounting, received the Study UK Alumni Awards (Finalist). The British Council Egypt has launched this prestigious award for the first time, celebrating the outstanding achievements of the UK s international alumni. The Alumni Awards demonstrate the impact of UK higher education and celebrate the achievements of distinguished UK alumni, raising the profile of the universities they attended and UK higher education. Award winners and finalists are leaders who have used their experience of studying at a UK university to make a positive contribution to their communities, professions and countries (2023). Atta Gebril , professor of applied linguistics and associate dean for graduate studies and research in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences (HUSS), won the Abdul Hameed Shoman Award for Arab Researchers in the area of applied linguistics (2023). Salima Ikram , a distinguished university professor in the Department of Egyptology, has been elected a fellow of the British Academy in recognition of her contributions to the humanities and social sciences. This year's cohort includes 86 fellows from the United Kingdom and other countries (2023). Magda Mostafa , associate professor of design at the Department of Architecture and associate at Progressive Architects, has been honored with a Friendly and Inclusive Spaces Award from the International Union of Architects (UAI) for her Autism Friendly University Design Guide . UIA s award is given in recognition of an evidence-based design research project that makes a significant contribution to improved quality of life by facilitating a better understanding of human-centered design and its application to the design of the built environment (2023). Hesham Sallam , professor at the Institute of Global Health and Human Ecology (IGHHE), received the Robert Lynn Carroll Award at the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology s 83rd Annual Meeting in recognition of his scholarly excellence in the field. Sallam and his team, many of whom are research assistants at AUC, represented the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) at the event in Ohio, where they were granted five prestigious awards for their leading work in vertebrate paleontology (2023). Reem Bassiouney , professor and chair Applied Linguistics department, received T he Egyptian State Award for Excellence in Literature from the Egyptian State Supreme Council of Culture. This award is given on the basis of life achievements and publications (2022). Kim Fox , p rofessor of p ractice at the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication , received two Best of Festival Award s from t he Broadcast Education Association . T he Broadcast Education Association is the premier international academic media organization, driving insights, excellence in media production, and career advancement for educators, students, and professionals (2022). Shahira S. Fahmy , professor of the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, received The Mentorship Award at the 9th Undergraduate Research Competition in Public Relations and Mass Communications, Abu Dhabi University (2022). Ibrahim Karkouti , assistant professor at the Department of Educational Studies, was awarded the 2022 Intriligator Interorganizational Leadership Award for his contributions to the Educational Leadership field. The Doctoral Program in Educational Leadership at the University of Hartford (UHART) offers this award to one of its alumni, who has shown great promise in bringing people and organizations together for the betterment of society (2022). Nabil Ibrahim Mohareb , associate professor of Architecture and Urban Design, Department of Architects, was awarded the Open House International - Literati Award for best reviewer . This award is for the outstanding academic reviewer for the Open House International Journal (Q2 journal) (2022). Mohamed Salama , associate professor, Department of Institute of Global Health and Human Ecology, received the SOT Arab Toxicologists Association SIG Outstanding Professional Award. The Outstanding Professional Award is given to an investigator of Arab origin who contributes significantly to understanding and advancing the toxicological science (2023). The Egyptian Ideal Physician Award. The Egyptian Medical Syndicate awards -yearly- an ideal physician who contributed to the medical practice in Egypt (2022). 2021 - 2022 Kim Fox , professor of practice in the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, is the first to win two Best of Festival awards at the 2022 Broadcast Education Association Festival of Media Arts Competition. She received the awards for two separate episodes from her podcast, Ehky Ya Masr. Nageh Allam , professor and director of the nanotechnology graduate program at The American University in Cairo's (AUC) Department of Physics, has won the 2022 Obada Prize for Distinguished Scientists in Physical Sciences for his multidisciplinary research on water desalination and energy conversion and storage. Jehane Ragai , Professor Emerita in the Department of Chemistry, received the Most Promising New Textbook Award from The Textbook and Academic Authors Association for her co-authored book with Professor Tamer Shoeib, Technical Art History: A Journey Through Active Learning (2022). Mohamed Salama , associate professor at the Institute of Global Health and Human Ecology (I-GHHE), received The SOT Arab Toxicologists Association SIG Outstanding Professional Award 2022. The Outstanding Professional Award is given to a young investigator of Arab origin who contributes significantly to understanding and advancing the toxicological science. Furthermore, Salama received the Egypt Ideal Physician for the year 2022 (الطبيب المثالي علي مستوي الجمهورية). Tamer Shoeib , professor at the Department of Chemistry, received the Most Promising New Textbook Award from The Textbook and Academic Authors Association for his co-authored book with professor Emerita Jehane Ragai, Technical Art History: A Journey Through Active Learning (2022). Hesham Sallam , associate professor at the Institute of Global Health and Human Ecology (IGHHE), is the winner of the Science and Sustainability Award in the British Council's 2021-2022 Study UK Alumni Awards for his research and leadership in the field. Amr Adly , the assistant professor at the Department of Political Science, won the 2021 Roger Owen Book Award for his analysis of Egypt's failed economic liberalization strategies. His research covers the period from the 1970s to the revolution that toppled former president Hosni Mubarak in 2011. Ibrahim Awad , professor of practice and director of the Center for Migration and Refugee Studies in the Department of Public Policy and Administration, was granted the Friends of Migrants Award for his contributions to issues related to migration by The International Organization for Migration in Egypt. Shahira S. Fahmy , professor, Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, received the Deborah Gump Research Award at the Champions of Editing Research Competitions of The Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication ( AEJMC ) annual convention, USA, August 2021, and Top Paper Award (First place) at the Visual Communication Division of the AEJMC annual convention, USA, August 2021. Jamal Haidar , assistant professor of economics, Department of Economics, has been ranked by IDEAS- Research Papers in Economics ( RePEc) among the Top 10% of Economics Authors (Last 10 years publications) as of December 2021. Tarek Selim ( Years of Service 2002 - 2023) , professor at the Department of Economics, received the Lifetime Research Fellow Award from the Economic Research Forum (ERF), which is one of the leading regional think tanks of the Middle East region. The award is based on more than 20 years of my research contributions, reaching more than 90 publications in highly reputable journals and publications in economics and business research. (2021) Moustafa Youssef , a professor at the Department of Computer Science and Engineering , is ranked second in Research.com 's list of top computer scientists in Egypt. He has made considerable strides in his research on employing mobile devices for location tracking technology -- gaining recognition from top educational and scientific institutions, as well as major tech companies (2021). Maha Bali , associate professor of practice at the Center for Learning and Teaching, won the Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service from the Consortium of American Liberal Arts Institutions ( AMICAL) outside the US in January 2021. The coordinating committee officers recognize the exceptional and sustained efforts Bali has made to support consortial goals and on behalf of AMICAL's member institutions and colleagues. In particular, they recognize Bali's contributions to committee work, community discussions, and event organizing, which stand out for her critical reflection, informed and relevant comments, and inclusiveness of spirit.
